STEPANAKERT (Tiraspol Times) - Despite Armenia’s declared position that Kosovo independence will not be
Kosovo's authorities plan to declare independence unilaterally, against the will of Serbia. The United States and most of the EuropeanUnion members have voiced their readiness to recognize Kosovo’sindependence despite Serbian objections.
Will dependence-seeking Kosovo set a precedent for other conflicts elsewhere? The answer is yes, if Kosovo becomes independent. In that case, "extrapolation is inevitable" says Bulgarian Professor of History Nina Dyulgerova.
This weekend, I head to Dallas as World Igbo Congress(WIC) convenes. The last time the convention was held in Dallas was in 2000. I still remember the debacle of that convention when some leaders of WIC tried to smuggle in Abubakar Rimi to headline the event. But those were WIC’s good old days.
The cup of the Uba brothers, Sen. Andy Uba and Chris Uba seemed to have become full as the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party wielded the big stick on Thursday by suspending them from the party.
Chairman of the National Population Census (NPC), Dr Festus Odimegwu has alleged that no credible census had been conducted in Nigeria since 1816. According to him, census figures were regularly distorted for selfish reasons.
Because I find myself rudely sandwiched, between those who are dancing to the rhythms of acrobatic Atilogwu drums, and the almost ethereal gracefulness of the Adanma Dancers, just like King David unashamedly did when the Ark of the Lord entered into Jerusalem.
Not too long ago in China, an avalanche of honours fell on Nigeria's path. It happened when one of her unsung heroines surprised the world by claiming a coveted prize at a recent edition of the ChinaNano Science Conference.
Her work in the field of Nano science and technology - an aspect of chemistry – won the best prize, outclassing over 1,000 other entries.
Nigeria’s nationality question is neither the creation of the Igbo nor the Yoruba. It is the consequence of Hausa-Fulani’s megalomaniac quest for political power in the nation. Yet the Hausa-Fulani accept the fact that both the Igbo and Yoruba hold the key to their attainment of this divine-right objective only if both groups agree to remain suspicious of the other.
Few hours ago, I had what I would consider an eye opening discussion with one of my intellectual mentors, a sound academic of Kalabari extraction who came in into the country a week ago from the US. A first class economist who holds the record of completing a Doctorate in record time in the US.
No Predator will attack what it cannot see! People might see some of us as weaklings, they are entitled to their opinion. I believe, for any society to be complete, it must have those who will say, lets die today, and those who will be afraid to die today.. That makes a complete society.
THE year was 1965. I was an innocent starry-eyed 13 year-old and Nigeria was in turmoil. It was the era of the “wetie,” when the houses of politicians and key public-figures were burnt down in the brouhaha that was then Western Nigeria.
The House of Representatives recently released what it called outcomes of public hearings held in respect of its process of amending the 1999 Constitution. If those touted outcomes become law, they will mean de facto and de jure end of the concept and practice of federalism under Nigeria’s constitution. In virtually every instance, the Representatives voted against federalism!
@Adeyinka Grandson: Talking about who is a coward between the Yoruba and the Igbo is like comparing the sheep and the lion. "For more than four decades, the Igbo have labelled the entire Yoruba race as cowards". So what has changed?
This would be perhaps my final response to Femi Fani Kayode in regards to the lies, hypocrisy, sadism and blatant tribalism he disgorged in regards to the Lagos deportation saga and the unrelated issues of the January 1966 coup, the pogroms and the Biafran conflict he brought into the mix in advancement of his relevance seeking gambit through bigotry.
In my initial rebuttal to the infantile tantrum dished out by Femi-Fani-Kayode, I made it clear that his character orientation tilted to anti national cohesion tendency. I blamed our past leaders for fostering such unstable personality on Nigerians.
One lesson I learnt over the years is to ignore rabble rousers no matter the degree of their provocation. The recurrent decimal that defines political failures is their unalloyed penchant at deploying religion and ethnicity in craving for a seat on the political gravy train. The irony is the success rate of this tactics notwithstanding the damage it does to the polity and national cohesion.
