Suicide bomber kills 5 in Yobe church

A suicide bomber yesterday deto­nated a bomb in a church in Potis­kum, Yobe’s commercial town, killing no fewer than five people.

The bomber, who rode to the church on a motorcycle at about 10 a.m. arrived mid­way into the Sunday service. He sat down quietly amid worshippers, who were un­aware of his evil mission to the church.

“He came on a motor­cycle, parked the bike out­side, entered the church and sat down. Minutes later, the bomb went off. Five people died and about 20 people were injured,” Jeremiah Ladan, a Potiskum resident, told Daily Sun.

The church, a 30- mem­ber congregation of The Re­deemed Christian Church, is located at the outskirts of town along Jos Road.

The pastor and his wife were said to be among the victims of the blast.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Toyin Gbadegesin, an As­sistant Superintendent of Po­lice, confirmed the incident to journalists in Damaturu.

“A male suicide bomber at about 10 a.m. detonated a bomb at The Redeemed Church, Jigawa area in Po­tiskum, killing five persons. including the suicide bomb­er,” he disclosed.

He said some of the wor­shippers injured in the attack were receiving treatment at a state-run hospital.

A source at the Potiskum General Hospital confirmed five bodies were brought to the facility.
