Police kill 2 kidnappers, rescue 70-year-old victim in Benin

From TONY OSAUZO, Benin
Policemen from the Edo State Police Command yesterday shot dead two members of a kidnap gang in Benin city, Edo State. Six other suspected members of the gang were arrested while cache of arms, including three pumps action guns were recovered from them.
The incident occurred in Ugbowo area of Benin, following the abduction of a 70-year-old man, who went out for jogging by the kidnap gang.
They were said to have forced the man into the boot of an Audi car and drove off to their hide out where they met their waterloo when the police came after them. The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Foluso Adebanjo, while confirming the incident, said it occurred at about 6am and that his men went to rescue the man following a tip-off about the hide out of the kidnappers.
“Early this morning at about 6am, hoodlums came with a Audi vehicle and abducted this 70 years old man around Ugbowo. They put him in the boot of their Audi car and drove off.
“Information got to me, so I quickly directed our anti-kidnapping team to carry out a raid in that area. Our vehicle was parked far away from the hide-out, so our men trekked to the scene.
“One of them must have observed that it could be policemen and shouted. So they started firing at us and we responded. Two of them were shot dead while six were arrested.
“None of our men sustained any injury and we thank God for that. We observed that the old man was tortured when they were forcing him to inform them where to get ransom from. Like I said earlier, we will continue to go after them,” the commissioner said.
