Police block Amaechi from entering Govt House

FROM CHRIS ANUCHA, Port Harcourt

What would have resulted in a bloody clash between securitymen attached to the Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi and policemen from the state Police Command yesterday, was averted by divine intervention.

The governor, who was said to be returning from inspection of some projects in the state, had decided to take the Forces Avenue Road to his official residence in the Government House, but some policemen interrupted his movement.
The policemen, who said that they were acting on instruction, allegedly attempted to stop him from entering the Government House.

According to a source, as the governor’s convoy drove toward the Government House, it ran into about six police vehicles at a junction, close to the Port Harcourt Club axis of the road, blocking the road. Those in the entourage were said to have gone to the policemen to inform them that it was the governor’s convoy, but they were ignored.
Worried by the development after several minutes, Governor Amaechi alighted from the vehicle, walked to the policemen and told them to allow him access to his residence.

The stern-looking policemen allegedly ignored him and started making phone calls, It was gathered that after the marathon phone calls, they told Governor Amaechi that there was an order from above not allow any person, including him to pass through the road.

In the ensuing argument, the policemen reportedly told the governor that they don’t take orders from ‘bloody civilians’. The governor with about 102 persons in his entourage later managed to take alternative route to his residence.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. David Iyofor confirmed the incident, but the police authorities could not be reached for comments as at press time.
