Multiple car crash in Onitsha kill 10

No fewer than 10 people were declared dead while several others sustained various degrees of injuries when a multiple motor accident occurred at the Upper Iweka area of Enugu-Onitsha Express way.

The accident involved a truck loaded with building materials moving from Nkpor area to Asaba in Delta State, three passenger buses and a tricycle, popularly called ‘Keke Napep.’

Eye witness account said the truck veered off its track and ran into the three buses and the tricycle, smashing them and killing some of their passengers and other people waiting to board vehicles to their various destinations.

It was also gathered that about three weeks ago, a ghastly accident occurred within the vicinity and also claimed many lives.

At the point of filing this report, relations of most of the accident victims were still running around to identify their corpses.

Daily Sun gathered that the corpses and some wounded victims of the accident were taken to St. Charles Borromeo Hospital Onitsha, General Hospital Onitsha, Iyi-Enu Hospital, Ogidi and Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, NAUTH, Nnewi.

When Daily Sun visited the scene of the accident, it was discovered that the Police Area Commander, Mr. Benjamin Wordu, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Fegge Police Station Onitsha, Mr. Garba Rabiu and officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were on ground providing security and removing the affected vehicles.

The incident resulted in  a traffic gridlock as most vehicles coming to and fro Onitsha were trapped for hours.

When contacted, the Police Area Commander confirmed that seven people whom he said were six men died on the spot.

“We tried to clear the road to avoid another accident because this is a busy road.”
