165 Boko Haram suspects get pardon

From MOLLY KILETE, Abuja

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) is set to release over 165, Boko Haram suspects arrested during military offensive against terrorists in the three states under emergency rule.
The states are Borno, Yobe and Adamawa. The suspects would be released to their respective state governments on a yet to be announced date.
A total of 157, suspects were arrested and detained at various military formations in Borno, while nine were arrested and detained in Yobe and the remaining one arrested in Adamawa.
Their release, according to Director, Defence Information (DDI), Major-General Chris Olukolade, was in compliance with a presidential directive.
In a statement issued yesterday in Abuja, Gen. Olukolade, said the suspects were among those earlier recommended for release by the Joint Investigation Team (JIT), set up by the DHQ in 2013.
Olukolade, while noting that many suspects were arrested during military operations to flush out terrorists in the North east, said some of the detainees arrested during the operations, especially women and children, had benefitted from similar gestures, which started in May last year, adding that “suspects in this category are also to benefit in the present exercise.”
